‘M’ is for Metro

Sometime long ago society banded together and decided that the symbol for a city’s metro system should be the letter “M.”

And it was so.

While this is great for any tourists looking to get around in an unfamiliar place, it poses a problem for transit agencies looking to have their brand stand out from the dozens of other agencies looking to do the exact same thing.

This article from CityLab highlights 77 different metro systems and the many ways that they’ve attempt to stand out.

The problem of the Metro M is a problem that designers are faced with all the time—how do you take something as simple as a letter and turn it into something familiar, memorable, and unique, all at the same time? (If you’re the Bucharest Metro, you give your M wings.)
